Foundation Face Off: Department Store vs. Drugstore

Foundation Face Off

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, one of my favorite products is Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Foundation. I love this product because it provides great coverage (while feeling lightweight), stays on all day (even in the horrid Florida humidity), and contains SPF. However, it is rather expensive at $37 a bottle. There are some days that I don’t feel like putting on a “full face” of makeup – but yet still want to be presentable for those unplanned runs to the store or surprise visits from family or friends. So, I decided to purchase a less expensive drugstore brand for times like this. After doing a little online research, I decided to try Revlon’s Color Stay as it appeared to be the most equivalent to the Estee Lauder Double Wear. To get a true comparison, I decided to wear Double Wear on one side of my face and Color Stay on the other side. So how did the Face Off go? Take a look!

I have the Revlon Color Stay on the left side and the Estee Lauder Double Wear on the right. You would never know that I have two different foundations on! I can feel a slight difference though. A feature I like about the Double Wear is that it sinks in to the skin and almost turns to a matte like finish. Even though it provides good coverage, it doesn’t feel heavy. The Revlon Color Stay feels a little heavier and I think this is because it does not sink into the skin as well. Other than that, the look and feel is very similar. The true test is staying power. My Estee Lauder Double Wear can withstand an all-day parade, 100 degree heat, pouring rain, and 5K walk/run. To test the Revlon Color Stay, I took a brisk 30 minute walk/run on the treadmill. The test proved that Color Stay can hold its ground too. Below is a pro and con comparison.

Estee Lauder Double Wear  ($37.00)
Pros: good coverage, SPF 15, humidity resistant, staying power
Cons: Cost

Revlon Color Stay (~$10-$13)
Pros: good coverage, cost, staying power
Cons: no SPF, feels a little heavier than Double Wear

I’m still very much in love with my Estee Lauder Double Wear but I have added the Revlon Color Stay to my beauty collection. For those looking for an inexpensive foundation that provides medium to full coverage (although I believe most foundation can be reduced to light coverage) and staying power, Revlon Color Stay may be a great option for you. Just remember to wear some sunscreen under it.

Until next time, stay beautiful! ~ Devon

  1. So I took the plunge! I was out of my MAC so I tried the Neutragena Long Wearing makeup. It goes on smooth and has good coverage. Seems to stay put, but haven’t given it a true test yet.
    Thanks for the push!
